The Following comes courtesy of a true Leftist.

I will start off with this. PLEASE do not rec'd this diary.

The following comes from an email my g/f received. The person who wrote this is extremely smart. When I say extremely.. I mean it.

He looks romantically and practically on Communism. He has been around the world and has been a real journalist for real newspapers. He has published books and is in contact with smart and important people all around the world.

He goes off on email rants like this often.

He and I do not always agree.

So... here it goes....

McBama/O'Caine

Any leftist who believes there is ANYTHING to be gained by an Obama presidency need only look at how he voted in the Senate today to (1) confirm that the president of the U.S. is a defacto emperor and indeed the new Tsar; (2) nullify what little remained of the First, Fourth and Fifth amendments; and (3) grant Big Business (and thus the Big Business aristocracy -- that is, the ruling class) permanent pre-revolutionary French or Tsarist-Russian status as forever above the law. This total and absolute betrayal of the promises that earned Obama the presumptive Democratic nomination is, of course, just the beginning of a presidency that will merely fill the air with words to conceal the fact that whomever is elected -- Demican or Republocrat, McBama or O'Caine -- we voters are (and now obviously forever will be) nothing more than the powerless subjects of a fascist, increasingly theocratic empire.

The role call of the vote, on HR 6304, is here:

http://senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_c all_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congres s=110&session=2&vote=00168

At least Washington state's senators Cantwell and Murray were (uncharacteristically) courageous enough to vote against it, a futile act of defiance for which they each should nevertheless be thanked.

I do not agree with most of his rant.

The reason I am posting this, is to get people to think. There are many out there on the Left, that want to support Obama but find it hard to do. Most of what we see and hear comes from Hillary supporters or "conservative Democrats but some are like my friend above.

Please do not bash on him, because if you met him in real life you might disagree, but I am sure you would respect him.

I am voting (2.00 / 1)

for Obama, no matter what. BUT WE all need to keep his feet to the fire.

I remember hearing and reading, from others and from myself, that WE would do this after the 2006 election. That we would pound on Reid and Pelosi is they strayed down the corporate path.

Well.... guess what they have been doing?

Yes, we have been able to get them to listen and react positively at times, but those times come when WE SCREAM and YELL! When WE Take action and make them HEAR Us! When WE hold their feet to the fire!

peace.

Re: I saw it. (2.00 / 1)

With all due respect Kev..Rome wasn't built in a day.  If there was a magic switch to make everything better in DC I'm sure Obama would use it.  This corrupt establishment has been building for years under the watchful eye of the GOP and is very powerful with the players it has in it.  It isn't something that will be easily toppled.  First step is getting a Dem in the WH and garnering as many seats as we can in congress.  Americans must continue to demand change, hold all politicians accountable and be steadfast in their commitment.  If the Democratic Primary was any indication the GOP has much to be worried about.

I do not agree with this rant.. totally.

I do understand the feelings.

It will take you and I keeping Obama and the congress honest, to bring people like my friend into the fold. But, he will always play from the outside. This I am positive about.  :)

Re: The Following comes courtesy of a true Leftist (2.00 / 1)

The reason I am posting this, is to get people to think.

Uh, well, what I'm thinking is, "Wtf?" That's supposed to be deep analysis? It's not even fully coherent. Obama would be a tsar/theocrat/fascist because he couldn't stop the FISA bill? Huh?

Anyone who actually suggests that there's little difference between Obama/McCain/Bush/politicians in general is either utterly uninformed, or so ideologically irrational that they can no longer tolerate anyone whose beliefs differ from theirs at all. (Given what you wrote about your friend, I'm guessing he's in the latter category.)

To borrow from Jeff Lieber, sorry to disappoint you but Obama's just not going to buy you a new bicycle. Ugh. What a pantload.

the word "rant"?

Re: did you notice (none / 0)

I understand, and most of us are pissed, too. But a good rant at least reveals some larger truth.

Yes, telecom immunity sucks. It has no constituency. I have no idea why any Democrat would feel it's necessary, and I'm disappointed that Obama didn't lead the charge against it. But in the grand scheme, it's a lesser issue, and I'm not going to accuse Obama of being a freaking tsar over it.

Maybe your friend should blame Bush for breaking the damn law in the first place. Or he could blame Democrats in Congress for not standing up to this bill despite being in the freaking majority. Or maybe he could blame his fellow cowardly countrymen, who are still so easily demagoged by "terra" that politicians are afraid to stand up to shitty bills for fear of being branded a terrorist-lover.

Now that would've been an understandable rant. But this is just gobbledygook.

no (none / 0)

A rant is a rant. It does not need to analyze. It is about true emotion and true feelings.

The problems with this new FISA bill are not all wrapped up in telecom immunity.

If you have not already done so, please see Feingold on Countdown. It is on the front page.

Yes he backs up Obama, but he also gives us a better feel for why this is a BAD thing.

Oh trust me, he bashes the bush regime all he can. I have no doubt he is on a watch list.  About his fellow countrymen... oh you don't want to go there with him on this. He spits venom when he talks about how stupid the American voter is.

Bush broke the law - the dems stood by and closed (none / 0)

their eyes to it - the whole lot of them should be run out of office and replaced with people of convictions - they are so complacent in their ivory towers doing the bidding of corporate interests that they've become rotten to the core!

It's nothing but a disgrace but I'm not surprised - it's always been that way - they run on reform and promises of reforms and nothing happens - they cave in for their own political motives!

Re: The Following (2.00 / 1)

Wasn't there a diary recently quoting Voltaire's comment that "the perfect is the enemy of the good"?  I understand the person's frustration, really I do, but it's absolutist positions such as this that get us nowhere.  When everything looks the same, one has lost perspective.

this quote "the perfect is the enemy of the good" but I have also seen reid, pelosi and others start to use this quote to justify their stupidity!

In their minds the Bad is better than being Unelected.

Well, keep it up and (hopefully) they will all become Unelected and see where that gets them.

We need Term Limits on Congress and the Senate NOW!

Term limits are BS (2.00 / 1)

I will not go into it now.

I have lots to say why term limits are a bad thing.

One last thing... we do have term limits in a way right now. It is called our vote.

I am less than impressed by this rant. Intelligent doesn't equal smart. I say that as someone with an IQ that qualifies me for membership in Mensa. In spite of that high IQ I have done and said some incredibly stupid things throughout my life. I am sure I will do and say more before it's all over.

Re: The Following comes courtesy of a true Leftist (2.00 / 1)

Your friend sounds like Gore Vidal--and I agree with his rant completely!  (I wondered why in a recent interview he didn't publicaly endorse Obama.)  This is precisely what we HRC supporters have been saying all along--Obama is not really for change.  And now his vote for the FISA bill proves the point.  Obama is bent on EXPANDING--not changing--what King George and the neo-cons have already set up in Washington. It is sad indeed that so many have been fooled by this charismatic figure.

We should also give HRC much praise for voting against the FISA Bill.

Obama veers to the right, but did he have to take (2.00 / 1)

the Constitution with him?

www.slare.com/id/2195008/:

excerpt:

It's not an overstatement to say that in the past month Obama has tugged the First, Second, Fourth, and Eighth amendments to the center. Not a day goes by, it seems, without a constitutional wink to the right on guns (he thinks there is an individual right to own one), the wall of separation between church and state (he thinks it can be lowered), the Fourth Amendment prohibition on warrantless wiretapping (he's changed his position on FISA), and on the death penalty for noncapital child rape cases (he thinks it's constitutional) as well as a possible shift this week on the right to abortion (which could further limit the reach of Roe v. Wade).

Sorry, but I had to rec'd anyway because there needs to be some balance and honesty on this site, IMO.

On some level (2.00 / 2)

I wonder why your friend bothers participating in American politics. Short of being a one-man band for Feingold, he has no candidates to support, nor will he for the foreseeable future.

The great strength and tragedy of Democracy is that policy tends to regress to the mean, no matter how venial that mean may be. I work with people who think removing telecom immunity would actually be unpatriotic, and yet to read the blogs you'd be utterly baffled as to why the bill even passed.

It's not a fight between us and our politicians, its a fight between us and the opinions of our fellow Americans. You want FISA killed? Stop bloviating on blogs and go convince a few million average Americans it sucks. You want strict separation of C&S? Come make your case in downtown Pittsburgh, where 75% of the populace has smudged foreheads on Ash Wed.

Politicians implement the will of the people, for sufficiently large values of "people". They aren't steamships, defining the course of the country, they are sailboats tacking this way and that to take advantage of the wind of opinion. That's what they do, and that's what they are supposed to do.

Clearly your friend acknowledges he's on the Left. With that acknowledgment should come the realization that much of the rest of the country is on his Right, and by definition the momentum and direction of America will always tend to that mean.

If you want to effect change, start with your co-workers, your family, your friends...not your Senator.

meh...I guess that was my rant.

You can't please everyone (none / 0)

We can win this election without true leftists like your friend. It is a HUGE mistake to try and please everyone.  I would rather spend resources trying to convince the 100 voters who are undecided than spend the same amount of time and effort trying to convince people like your friend to vote for Obama.  Some people are going to get left behind and I am A OK with that.  Screw em.  I didn't suffer through eight years of Bush to lose the WH because people like your friend got in the way.

A true Leftist. (none / 0)

It's an okay rant, I guess, but let's not forget that "true leftists" are a distinct minority in this country.  Doesn't mean they're wrong (although I question both "fascist" and "theocratic") just that there aren't that many of them.
